Two and a half days of Greek flavors extravaganza ! It’s not much, it can be a week and still not be enough…but we have to start somewhere.
Spring is almost over, the bees are still buzzing, flowers are blooming, the weather is getting warmer every day, and the days are growing longer. It is the best time of the year to escape to the countryside of Northern Greece, savor exquisite wines (both new and old), and indulge in delicious food.
Just an hour’s drive from Thessaloniki, you’ll find plenty of wineries to explore. The French have a saying, “l’embarras du choix”—the dilemma of too many choices—and they’re absolutely right! The hardest part will be deciding where to start. But don’t worry—you’ll be back for more before you know it.
Thessaloniki’s Makedonia International Airport conveniently connects to most major cities in Europe, making your getaway easy to plan.
Day 1- afternoon
Start with a stroll along Thessaloniki’s beautiful promenade, where you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Olympus. Then, head to On Rooftop at ON Residence Hotel for an aperitif—perhaps a glass of wine or a refreshing cocktail. Our city is famous for its sunsets, each evening painting the sky in different colors.
From there, it’s just a ten-minute walk to Sebriko Restaurant for dinner. Nestled beside the city's ancient western walls, this cozy spot serves hearty, seasonal Greek cuisine with a creative twist. Everything on your plate is fresh and locally sourced and their wine list is very interesting.
End the night with a post-dinner drink at Lena’s Bistro in the lively Ladadika district. This charming little bar sits at the heart of the pedestrian streets of the old olive market. Relax outside with your drink, watch the world go by, and soak in the atmosphere—it’s better than a movie!
Day 2
For a typical breakfast, Thessaloniki style, head to Serraikon for authentic bougatsa—a special phyllo pastry filled with cream, cheese, or spinach—right next to Modiano Market. It’s going to be a long and exciting day, so go ahead and indulge! This iconic spot has been serving delicious bougatsa since 1958.
Next on your list is a one-of-a-kind tasting experience of Greek olive oil and honey at Olicatessen, just a one-minute walk inside Modiano Market. Elli, the expert, will guide you through the secrets of different olive and honey varieties, rich flavors, and unique aromas.
Now, it’s time to leave the city behind and head to the vineyards of Naoussa—the land of Xinomavro. Drive through the plateau of Veria and the peach tree orchards, to reach Naoussa, then you continue your route towards the charming village of Arkochori, nestled in the hills of Mount Vermion. Your lunch awaits ! The 20-minute drive winds through stunning cherry orchards—if you visit in April, May, or June, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking view of trees in bloom or laden with fruit.
On the way there, mid way up the mountain you will find Kokkinos Winery, a small family run winery. Here they make wines with love and passion, the main variety is of course Xinomavro.
There is only one place to eat in Arkochori, at Harama restaurant, trust me it’s worth the drive. Food is excellent, mainly meat dishes cooked with local recipes. Their wine list consisting mainly of local wines is superb.
For an overnight stay in Naoussa, Palea Poli Hotel is an excellent choice. With its warm hospitality and farm-to-table restaurant, it’s a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
