The journey from Thessaloniki to Naoussa takes just one hour, guiding you through one of Northern Greece’s most captivating landscapes — the ideal start to a truly memorable wine tour experience.
On crisp winter days, you enjoy magnificent views of snow-covered Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece and one of the most legendary in the world. For the adventurous traveler, hiking Mount Olympus can even be part of a broader Northern Greece experience.
On clear winter days, the snow-capped peak of Mount Olympus rises dramatically on the horizon — a powerful reminder that this is a region where myth, mountain, and vineyard coexist. As you leave the city behind, you cross fertile plains shaped by river deltas flowing into the Thermaic Gulf. This is one of Greece’s most important agricultural zones.
After turning toward Veria and Naoussa, the scenery shifts. We find ourselves driving through the largest peach orchards in Greece. If you are lucky enough to make this trip from mid March to early April, you will witness a “sea” of pink blossoms — something reminiscent of the Japanese Sakura.
As we approach Veria, we can clearly see the Aeolian park at the top of Mount Vermion, hopefully dusted with snow, as it hosts two ski resorts. Yes, we have skiing in Greece! It may come as a surprise, but Greece is about 80% mountainous and is the second most mountainous country in Europe after Andorra and before Switzerland.
Continuing along Mount Vermion, we enter Naoussa’s wine country. Unlike regions with vast, uninterrupted vineyards, Naoussa’s vineyards are small and scattered across the hills, interwoven with peach and apple orchards. This mosaic landscape gives the region its charm — and its distinctive terroir.
