Wineries in Northern Greece - Naoussa

Our odyssey through the Macedonian wine region

Let me take you on a journey to the different wine regions of Northern Greece, through the wineries that I have visited the past few months.

My journey started in January in Ktima Kir-Yianni in Yiannakochori. Located at the foothills of Mount Vermion, it was a rare sight as you could see the bare vineyards with a backdrop of the ski slopes of 3-5 Pigadia Ski Resort. The winery team led by Elpida Palamida are doing an excellent job in welcoming guests and taking them through the wine tasting with the wines of the estate. In the restaurant, overlooking the mountain and the vineyards, chef Kiriaki Fotopoulou, designed the pairing and à la carte menu with balance and elegance. With spring around the corner a daily trip here is ideal to combine Wine Touring & History . Another activity involves biking by the vineyards, as you can rent bikes and cycle around the estate . Then if you are still feeling adventurous, pick up your picnic basket and head under the “2 Elies” or by the pond to enjoy your lunch.

Ktima Chrysochoou is just 5min away, the wines here are a family business. The “vine” roots of the family go back to 1948, but it’s Kimis and Betty who made their dream come true. They planted more vines and constructed this beautiful winery in the middle of the vineyards. Now it’s the turn of the children to take over, Nana and Yiannis. The winery is open for visits and it also has a big banquet space for private events.

Located just at the entrance of Naoussa is Dalamaras winery, small and authentic with exquisite wines that travel the whole world. The winemaker Kostis (5th generation) and his wife Maria continue the legacy of his ancestors that started back in 1840. A tour of the winery and a tasting in the rustic area by the tsipouro distiller is an experience. With the 6th generation about to enter this world, the visits are for now on hold, so it’s better to call before visiting.

As Naoussa is one of the most important wine regions in Greece, I have many more wineries to explore and be sure that I will keep you up to date.
